At the center of the present work is the thesis that in scientific actions photographic products are used as arguments
to be used. The pragmatically oriented semiotics of Charles
Sanders Peirce (1839-1914). In the case of photography, he speaks of a secondary object that refers to a primary object.
Since its beginnings, photography has never played such a major role in any other discipline as in astronomy, which is reflected in
Part II of the book is exemplified by epoch-making examples – starting with the photographic proof of existence of
solar prominences over the substantiation of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity up to the world model of an expanding
space or the “first photo” of a black hole.
Sebastian Voltmer was already in his youth occupied with the topic of the use of photographic methods in astronomy,
with which he became a prizewinner of the Jugend forscht. Also in the final thesis of his studies of “visual communication” played
astrophotography played a central role; he shot the highly acclaimed film Return of Mars.
The present work, his dissertation on Dr. phil., represents a further highlight of his interdisciplinary work in media theory and astrophotography.
